Privacy policy
This is a draft policy, and is likely to change as details of the broadband service are established.
Garboldisham Broadband Limited respects your right to privacy. We have to retain some personal information to supply our services, and the ways in which we use it are set out in this Privacy Policy. You consent to these uses when you make use of the the service. We comply with data protection legislation and will be registered as necessary with the Information Commissioner's Office. We shall take reasonable measures to protect any personal information that we hold, and to remove any data that we no longer need and are not required to retain.
This policy only applies to the Garboldisham Broadband internet services and web site. It does not cover those web sites or other services that you can reach via the Internet or through links to other sites from our web sites. They will have their own privacy policies for dealing with information that you give them explicitly (for instance, by filling in forms on web pages) and that which they can obtain automatically when you visit their site. Where sites are hosted outside the European Union, the laws affecting privacy may be very different from those that apply here.
It also does not apply directly to those companies we subcontract to provide services. We use a specialist company to install and manage the wireless connections within the village, Aramiska to supply the satellite link to the Internet, and Fasthosts to support e-mail services and our web site. These are all EU-based companies who are obliged to respect privacy and keep personal information secure. We explain below what information we pass to them and what we would expect them to obtain for themselves.

Registration details
We collect personal information on the registration form. Details of bank accounts will only be used by us to collect payments for services or confirm that these have been made. None of these details will be passed to any third party (including our supporting companies), except where you provide us with a Standing Order form to pass on to your bank.
Your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address will be passed to the installers so that they can arrange and carry out the equipment installation, and any subsequent maintenance.
The wireless connection
Details of the account names and passwords that we agree with you will be stored on the local equipment and used to validate you as a registered user. We may need to share this information with the network maintainers.
The system will report on the amount of use being made of the network by each user, to both ourselves and the network maintainers. We need this information to monitor the network service quality, to guard against unauthorised users and worm infections, and where necessary to limit excessive use.
In order to operate, the wireless connection needs to maintain temporary records of the Internet locations being accessed by each user. This information is not reported to Garboldisham Broadband Limited and we do not seek to obtain it.
You provide us with e-mail addresses and passwords so that we can set up your mailboxes. We pass this information to Fasthosts when we do this. However, we do not pass on any other personal data. We record the e-mail addresses you select so that we can contact you about the service or changes in the terms and conditions. We do not keep a record of the passwords once the mailboxes are set up, and we do not share your e-mail address with anyone else.
E-mail you receive will be held in your mailbox at Fasthosts until you pick it up. E-mail you send or receive will be stored briefly as it passes through the system. The system may also log who has sent and received the e-mail and keep this information for a short period of time. This information is not reported to Garboldisham Broadband Limited and we do not seek to obtain it.
The web site
Our web site is accessible to anyone with an Internet connection. We collect no information about visitors other than that submitted through forms on the web pages. These forms will always make clear where information will be sent, if it does not go to Garboldisham Broadband Limited. The information may be sent by e-mail, and hence cannot be guaranteed to be entirely secure (see our Internet security page). We therefore do not collect information that is not likely to be widely known in this way.
Our web site currently makes no use of "cookies" (small files stored on your computer that enable the web site to record information about you), unless you log in to update part of the site. If you do, some session control information, including your user name, is recorded in a "session cookie". This disappears when you exit your browser. Updates you make will be stamped with your user name and the update time.
Fasthosts provides us with information on how much data has been transferred from the web site. This contains nothing that would identify any user personally. We would expect them to maintain some records of who has visited the web sites they host, and which pages they have accessed, for their own purposes, which must be legal under the Data Protection Act.
Compulsory disclosure
Garboldisham Broadband Limited (or the companies we use to supply services) may be required to disclose personal information to comply with applicable laws and lawful government requests.
