Our e-mail service
We can offer e-mail addresses of the form <username>@garboldisham.net. (In most cases we suggest individuals should use a name such as john.smith). The advantage of an address like this is that you can change your ISP without having to inform everyone who sends you e-mail of a change of address. There is currently no charge for this service, although we reserve the right to limit numbers or refuse to allocate addresses, and all use of the addresses is subject to the relevant parts of our acceptable use policy.
Incoming messages are checked for viruses and spam. Viruses are removed. Spam is not deleted but the suspect message is marked. Most mail programs allow you to define rules to delete marked messages, or send them to a different mail folder.
Mail can be collected from a mailbox associated with this address. It has a capacity of 5Mbytes and is accessible either using a POP3 connection from a mail program such as Outlook Express or through a web mail interface. If your mail box capacity is exceeded, messages may be rejected without warning.
Mail to this address can also be forwarded to any other e-mail address. The ways of accessing this mail and the limits on total storage and individual message size and lifetime are then set by the receiving mailbox. Virus and spam filtering remain active.
If you do not have existing access to the Internet, we can provide a basic pay-as-you-go dial-up ISP service.

Setting up your e-mail program
The following settings are for people who use e-mail programs such as Outlook Express to read and send their e-mails, and want to pick up their mail directly rather than having it forwarded. References to <username>s and <password>s are to the information provided on your registration form.
Each e-mail program will have its own way of entering these settings. If you provided several user names, you can set up one identity for each of them following the pattern below for each name.
Settings for Internet connections
| Your e-mail address: | <username>@garboldisham.net |
|---|---|
| Mail host for receiving mail: | mail.garboldisham.net |
| User name for logging in to host: | <username>@garboldisham.net |
| Password for logging in to host: | <password> |
| Mail host for sending mail: | smtp.fasthosts.co.uk |
Web mail access is provided at webmail.garboldisham.net. Log in using your <username> and <password>.
You should only use this mail host for sending mail if you are using the basic dial-up ISP service. If you are using another ISP you should use their mail sending host: like most ISPs, ours will reject attempts to use their mailer other than through their dial-up connections.
On passwords
There is no connection between the password you use for e-mail and the one you use for accessing the Garboldisham web site. You do not have to be a registered web site user to have an e-mail address.
Setting up mailboxes for garboldisham.net requires the use of an administration program, although setting up mail forwarding does not. There is unfortunately no mechanism for allowing users to set their own passwords from their own machines. We do not maintain records of the passwords once set, and there is no way of recovering passwords from the administration systems, so if you forget your password we shall have to set a new one. If you are particularly concerned about securing your e-mail access, we can arrange for you to visit one of the administrators and type your password into the administration screen.
